Can I build a washing machine cabinet myself, or should I buy one?
Building a washing machine cabinet yourself sounds appealing, but safety is an important consideration. A standard piece of furniture or a home-built cabinet is not designed to absorb the high forces and vibration of a washing machine. That leaves you with no guarantee that the construction stays safe. A Wastoren® cabinet is developed specifically for washing machines and dryers, has a distinctive construction with a metal base plate and is independently TÜV tested for safety and stability. That way you choose a solution where you know for certain that your appliances stand safely.
Building a washing machine cabinet yourself
Building it yourself gives you freedom over the dimensions and the finish. It does call for a fair amount of DIY skill, tools (such as a circular saw, a drill and a spirit level) and time. With a self-built cabinet you have to pay particular attention to:
Absorbing vibration: a washing machine vibrates heavily during the spin cycle. Use sturdy material and make sure the construction is stable so the cabinet does not move with it.
Moisture-resistant material: a laundry room is a damp environment. Choose water-resistant material such as exterior-grade MDF or plywood, and avoid untreated chipboard, which swells when damp.
Enough ventilation: leave space open at the back and sides to prevent overheating and moisture build-up.
Load-bearing capacity: a washing machine full of water and laundry soon weighs 80 to 100 kilos. With a raised installation the construction has to carry that weight without any trouble.
Wall fixing: anchor the cabinet firmly to the wall so it stays stable and safe.
Buying a ready-made cabinet
A ready-made washing machine cabinet from Wastoren® is designed specifically for washing machines and dryers. The cabinet is thought through in terms of dimensions, ventilation and stability, so you know everything adds up. You save time, get a clean finish and do not have to worry about the construction or the right material.
Which option suits you?
Choose to build it yourself if you have an unusual space, DIY experience and tools, and the time to take it steadily.
Choose to buy if you want a safe, well-fitting solution quickly, with a professional finish and no fuss over materials and tools.
